What is Biodiesel?

Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources. It can be used in compression-ignition (diesel) engines with little or no modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics.

Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification. The process creates two products — methyl esters (the chemical name for Biodiesel) and glycerin, a useful product commonly found in soaps, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and many other products. Visit WRE Chem & Pharm for more information on glyercin.

Biodiesel is produced from renewable resources such as:

  • Used cooking oil/grease and petroleum-based oil products collected from restaurants, automotive lube centers, and other businesses. WRE Recyclers provides collection and cleaning services. Visit WRE Recyclers for more information or how to become a collection partner.
  • Soybeans and other oilseed crops. WRE Feed & Mill processes 78 tons of seed crops a day at the largest crush plant of its kind in the U.S. The virgin oils produced there are shipped to WRE Biofuels. For more information, visit WRE Feed & Mill.

Because these resources are abundant in the United States, Biodiesel is a sustainable fuel source that provides more energy security because of a reduced dependency on foreign oil imports.

But one of the biggest benefits of Biodiesel is the positive impact it has on our environment. Biodiesel reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 86%, particulate matter emissions by up to 47%, and hydrocarbon emissions by up to 67%; all of which are harmful pollutants that contribute to poor air quality. Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel to successfully complete the Environmental Protection Agency’s rigorous emissions and health effects study under the Clean Air Act.

Biodiesel is less toxic than table salt and biodegrades as fast as sugar, which makes it safer to use, handle, transport, and store. WRE Biodiesel is produced to strict quality standards (ASTM D6751) and our production facility is BQ-9000 accredited, which means WRE Biofuels voluntarily commits to higher-quality processes that include storage, sampling, testing, blending, shipping, distribution, and fuel management practices.
